Physically, Ofunne Obiamiwe and her family
survived the Biafran war, which was rife with ethnic genocide. She
arrived in the USA, filled with idealist beliefs in the promise of
liberty, freedom and rights for all. Very quickly, those ideas were
eroded by realities of politics, poverty, class, race and corporate
irresponsibility.
At its core, Ofunne's current work deals with multilayered concepts of race, racism, gender, poverty, class, inclusion/exclusion, power/disenfranchisement, culture, colonialism, and spirituality unattached to religion. It reflects a profound dedication to human rights and activism and belief that the afflictions of violence, discrimination and intolerance will continue to fester until they are replaced with understanding and empathy.
Her work is about duality and the juxtaposition of opposing ideas. It aspires not only to underscore problems but also to put forth solutions. Her goal is to form collaborative partnerships and to find effective ways of bringing to public spaces, issues so often conveniently swept under the rug.
For the past 5 years, she has focused on the creation of a diverse,
progressive, multicultural community that encourages dialogue and
the exchange of ideas. She hopes to work on projects that bring
light to the plight of exploited and impoverished peoples,
particularly those in the oil-rich Niger Delta of Nigeria.
