About Transforma Projects

OTIS MFA PUBLIC PRACTICE

The MFA Public Practice program at Otis College of Art & Design located in Los Angeles have been working under the guidance of Program Chair, Suzanne Lacy and in collaboration with Transforma Projects and the Crescent City Peace Alliance to understand the historic and socio-political contexts of the Plessy site. MFA students will lead art-based workshops, which will focus on historic and contemporary issues of civil rights in New Orleans. In addition, the student from Otis will be actively participating in the outreach, production and choreography for the events of Plessy Day.

Transforma Projects is a collective of artists and creative professionals formed after Hurricane Katrina as a means of supporting, nurturing and celebrating creative practices that impact the recovery of New Orleans. The initiative explores how art-making can intersect with other sectors such as education, health, environment and community development.

The initiative was founded by Jessica Cusick, Sam Durant, Rick Lowe & Robert Ruello. Transforma Projects works in partnership with the National Performance Network (NPN), an organization based in New Orleans.

Transforma Projects is in the process of developing a Local Advisory Team here in New Orleans comprised of artists and members of the fields mentioned above.
