Studio V Critic
The project concept consists of the duality between aesthetics and functionality and formalism.
The design works with the contrast between ornamentation versus formalism, from an idea of extreme graphic representation (the stained-glass façade) to the idea of pure representation of a solid form (ramps transforming into a single form). The idea of ramps surrounding the building contrast with the juxtaposition of intentions of closing the building to interior (massive concrete structure) versus opening it to the exterior (glass façade),by contrasting different aesthetics aims in the facades.
This process of contrasting opposite intentions can be defined as interpolation of form. As the word interpolation is defined by the process of estimating unknown values that falls between known values, the concept can be related to the limits of the design process and the discussion of pure aesthetics intentions versus its related attachments to function.
The circulation in the building in the concept model is made all by ramps that lead to different floors, on the ground level the viewer have the experience to circulate the entire site by a main ramp that surrounds the building facades. The ramps design leads to the interiorofthebuilding,contrastingout-sideandin-sideperceptions.
The second level ramp sense the duality between open view to the exterior on one side of the facades contrasted with the enclosure on the opposite.
On the massive concrete floor in balance is constituted by the continuity of the concrete ramp as they were a single piece. The intention was to show the ramp wrapping up the building and leading to this massive form. Also the design was thought of “hidden” the structure of this concrete slab in balance versus revealing the structure on the other facade(stainedglass).
