Skill Building / Research Phase (DJ Training):


Week one: Aug. 31: Course Introductions

Intro to course & OSpace class portfolio: Watch KXLU video. Demo digital audio recorders. Complete Recorded Interviews, and upload to OSpace along with profile picture and answers to questions on DJ profile page.

Homework: Begin Radio Show Reviews – listen to and record show; write review and post to OSpace. 


Sept. 7th Labor Day - no class


Week Two Sept. 14: History of Radio

Learn the history of Radio with guest speaker Eric Wrobbel. Listen to Ham Radio Growing in the Age of Twitter. Watch The CB Radio. Listen to Movie and Radio Show review examples. Demo audio editing software. Work in class on Radio Show Reviews 

Homework: Complete History of Radio Reflection &  Songs We Love / Songs We Hate. Continue working on Radio Show Reviews


Week Three Sept. 21: Independent vs. Commercial Radio
(3:30 meet @ KXLU/KLMU - walking directions & campus map)

KXLU/KLMU tour. Practice DJ’ing (Songs We Love / Songs We Hate) on-air. 

Homework: Listen to NPR Story about Radio CommercialsComplete KXLU Scavenger Hunt. Work on Radio Show Reviews


Week Four Sept. 28: News, Propaganda & Talk Radio

Discuss Nazi Radio PropagandaWatch Radio Free Europe at 60 and Prometheus Radio: What would you do with a community radio station?. Continue audio editing demo (if necessary) and work on Radio Show Reviews.
 Complete Radio Show Reviews and News, Propaganda & Talk Radio reflection.


Week Five Oct. 5: Experimental Radio

Listen to and critique Radio Show Reviews. Listen to examples of Experimental Radio. Re-organize groups for Radio Shows & begin planning KLMU and Low Powered FM Broadcasts.

Homework: Read Take it to the Air: Radio as Public Art (PDF). Complete Experimental Radio ReflectionWork on Radio Show Proposals & Low Powered FM Broadcast Proposals. 


Week Six Oct. 12: 

Work on Radio Show Proposals and Promotional Materials.

Homework:  Sign up for Radio timeslots and finalize Radio Show Proposals.


Week Seven Oct. 19: Mid Term

Present Radio Show Proposals and proposed Promotional Materials

Homework: Work on Radio Broadcasts. Complete Promotional Materials.


Final Project Phase:


Week Eight Oct. 26:

Promotional Materials due. Work on Radio Broadcasts. Add content to Radio Archive website.


Weeks Nine - Twelve Nov. 2, Nov. 9, Nov. 16, Nov. 23 

KLMU Radio Show Broadcasts.


Week Thirteen & Fourteen Nov. 30, Dec. 7

Low Powered FM Broadcasts


Week Fifteen Dec. 14

All documentation of all projects due - posted to OSpace & Radio website. Complete course evaluations and peer reviews. Post & Submit work in IL Section of  Learning ePortfolios.
